SMCS Foundation Awards Scholarships

 Nine area high school seniors received health care career scholarships from the Springfield Medical Care Systems (SMCS) Foundation. 

Recipients of $2,000 scholarships are:

Brittany Adnams, Springfield High School, to attend Univ of S Alabama for premed;

Abigail Brown, Fall Mountain Regional High School, to attend Quinnipiac for sports medicine and physical therapy;

Alyson Hewitt, Bellows Falls Union High School, to attend U Mass, Amherst for BSN;

Ashley Richardson, Springfield High School, to attend UVM for pre pharmacy;

Bailey Stauffer, Green Mountain Union High School, to attend Univ of Colorado for premed;

Dominic Strohmeyer, Green Mountain Union High School, to attend Drexel for biomedical engineering.  

Recipients of $1,000 scholarships are:

Alexandra Morley, Windsor High School, to attend Colby Sawyer for nursing;

Kaitlyn O’Neil, Black River High School, to attend UVM for nursing;

Megan O’Neill, Windsor High School, to attend Univ of New England for nursing.                   

These annual scholarships are funded with the proceeds of the Apple Blossom Cotillion and are awarded by a committee of hospital board members and volunteers.   

According to Larry Kraft, director of the Foundation, which presents both the Cotillion and the scholarships, the purpose of these scholarships is to help young people who are pursuing a career in health care to meet their college costs.  “It is a way,” Kraft says, “to give something directly to young people and to support health care as a career choice.’
