Springfield Hospital Awarded Grant For Women's Breast Care Screening

Posted on 10/4/2011

SPRINGFIELD, VT —  Springfield Hospital has received a grant in the amount of $20,000 from the National Breast Cancer Foundation, whose mission is to save lives through early detection and to provide mammograms for those in need.  Springfield Hospital was awarded the grant to provide screening and diagnostic mammograms and breast ultrasounds for women who have no insurance or for whom the cost of a mammogram prevents them from seeking needed services.

According to Hospital officials, there is a need throughout the Southern Vermont/New Hampshire region for this service. Vermont’s Windham County, in particular, has a higher-than-average mortality rate for breast cancer when compared to state- and nation-wide statistics.

Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers. Increased awareness and breast health screenings may result in early detection that can lead to improved treatment outcomes. “This grant funding will help us provide education, screening services, and peace of mind to women who need a mammogram but thought they were unable to receive one due to financial constraints,” comments Cheryl Sanctuary, Director of Practice Operations.
